Get to Know the Band! Josh Semprevivo

What's up Black Detour fans? I love you guys! So, I'm going to think of something cool to call you all. Something that all hardcore Black Detour fans will know each other by. Since i'm not really good at this whole blog thing, I pre-apologize if you're reading this because I will ramble, make fun of things, and probably vent all the stuff that is in my head right now.

So some cool things are coming out of the Black Detour camp right now. We're working on some new songs, we're recording some more music, and figuring some new ways to get you, the fans, involed in our lives. I really think you guys are going to dig the new music. Recently, with all the shit going on in my life, I have been able to step outside myself and really come up with some songs that have heart. Out of the worst times in your life, can come the most awesome things you will ever experience, and so songs are created.

This week some one asked me why I'm doing this, why am I playing shows that make us next to nothing, getting paid in cents and free drinks? Why am I placing my heart and soul into something that's not going to make me a millionare fast? I've played shows infront of ten people including the sound men and I've played shows infront of crowds that I couldn't even count, but why this band, this tribe of friends who are making music? Why? Because this band is going to change the world.

Yeah I know what you're thinking, "This is one cocky dude typing here." No, you're missing the point. It's not my lyrics that are going to change the world, nor is it Sam's beats, or Riche's licks, or Colt's bass slapping, it's the heart, it's the being that is music. I know we are not making this music for no reason, some how, some where one person is going to be moved, by the heart and energy we all place into our songs. And if you change one person's life you change the world. Change a life, change the world. Change a life, change the world. CHANGE A LIFE, CHANGE THE WORLD!!!!!!!!

Hopefully, if any of you guys or girls reading this mess of a blog get anything out of what I try to place into our music, it's we all need to place ourselves on the side some times and see what we can do to help some one out, or call bullshit on an injustice that we see everyday. Find some way to make a difference, expecially in our children's lives. Let's put our differences aside and be friends, but never cave in on our convictions, remember, tollerance isn't saying that every one is right, it's saying that even though you think what there doing is wrong, you're still going to treat them like a person. That's what this world can use right now, people treating people with respect.

Anyways, I told you I was going to ramble. In close, I'm excited for everything that is going to happen with this band. I'm excited to share our passions with you, the fans. I'm excited to maybe do for one person what other bands have done for me, save my life.

Get to Know the Band! Sam Macklin

I'm happy to write the first in a series of "get to know the band" blogs. I'm the newest member and hopefully I'll earn my tenure soon.

Josh approached me early this year with an offer to play. At that point I was still struggling to cope with returning to Pittsburgh from Philadelphia after a very messy breakup. I didn't have much direction and drumming seemed to be a hobby with no real outlet. This band is exactly what I needed when I needed it.

Passion, I believe, is the key to life. Too little, and your talents and dreams languish. Too much, and the door is open for violent fanatacism. I'm passionate about a lot of things. Creative food, well made beers and whiskies, history, theology and music to name the most important ones.

To speak of my bandmates, they're great people. We're getting on quite well as friends and it has lead to some sessions that have surprised us. I'm happy to contribute musically and work with a group that is so open to each others ideas.

I was asked what "Black Detour" means and, admittedly, I had no idea at first. Colt named us after a beltway detour that runs through our area. Pittsburgh artists like Don Caballero, Joe Negri, George Romero, Andy Warhol and Roger Humphries have proven that creativity and success doesn't need the mainstream high-gloss shine. Our area has a great history in jazz and do-wop, as well as rock. To me, this band is our way of taking the local attitudes toward and history of music in a new direction.....a slight detour.

New PA System Ordered!

Finally.....we have ordered a decent PA system. Most vintage equipment is awesome, but our old PA system was not. Yes, it worked...but it's time to move up in the world.

At last, Semp's vocals with come through with the clarity that they damn well deserve. We're all very anxious to get it in and start using it! If you have been to any of our shows, you know how desperately we needed this.

Let's hope it gets in soon!

New Songs, Agreed on Direction, Recording

Haven't posted anything in awhile, it's been an extremely busy summer for us.

We have written some new songs...both of which are in your face legit rock songs. Actually, one of the new songs materialized out of another song you may have heard us play at some of our shows. The slower If You Say has been transformed into the hard hitting, powerful Heroin Princess. Why the change? Well, we decided as a band that we needed to take all our songs in more of a hard rock direction, similar to Throwing Hope and Before Your Time. We've changed some old songs and have written some new ones to help achieve this. This is the music we live for and love.

We plan on going into the studio again before the summer is out. We want to record a few new demos, including two of the new songs. We'll keep you updated on the progress.

After this weekend, it's going to be a slow next two/three weeks for the band from a show perspective. Our plan is to spend the next few weeks polishing some new songs we're working on, and book all of August to showcase them to you!

Oh yea...and by the way.......once we get the new songs recorded, we are going to make them available for free download to you! We appreciate all the support....the least we can do is give you some free downloads, and as always, put on a kickass rock show anytime you come to see us!

After doing some thinking at our last rehearsal, we tried to come up with some good names for the song we have currently been streaming as "Untitled". We have decided to let our fans help choose the name for it! On our website, there is a poll where anyone can vote for their favorite choice. We love getting the fans involved...and this is just the first of many ways we plan to do so!
